Supporting community well-being through Japanese karate
Our Mission & Philosophy
Karatedo Honma Dojo is a nonprofit karate dojo based in NYC. Here, traditional Japanese karate is practiced as both a physical discipline and a way to cultivate awareness, steadiness, and community. Training is not about competition or display. It is about learning how to care for the body, quiet the mind, and show up fully for yourself and for others.
Our mission is to promote self-defense, physical fitness, mental discipline, and cultural appreciation through the practice of traditional Japanese karate.
As a nonprofit organization, we are committed to making this practice accessible to people of all ages, backgrounds, and economic circumstances.

Japanese Karate
At Honma Dojo, karate is understood as more than a physical discipline. It is a traditional Japanese art of movement, presence, and self-understanding. Rooted in centuries of Okinawan and Japanese martial practice, karate here emphasizes self-defense, steady personal development, and mindful focus rather than sport or competition.
Our independent style traces its heritage through the legacy of Master Mas Oyama and the teaching of Sensei Nobuyuki Kishi, shaped by more than three decades of inquiry by Sensei Masahiko Honma. Sensei Honma’s approach reflects both deep respect for tradition and continuous personal exploration — he remains both student and teacher in his own lifelong study of karate.
